The event, part of the Shifting the Power programme, saw thousands of young people from across the UK debate some of the most pressing global issues of our time.

The journey began with a national debating competition, engaging 150 secondary schools across the UK. The focus? Empowering students to explore and understand the importance of international aid and its role in building a better world.

After weeks of fierce debates, the two highest-scoring schools faced off in the Grand Final – held in the iconic surroundings of 10 Downing Street. The finalists, Cardinal Heenan High School from Liverpool and Sacred Heart School from London, squared off on the motion:

“This House believes that youth leadership is the best way to tackle the world’s most pressing issues.”

The debates were nothing short of inspiring. The students didn’t just prove that youth leadership is the future – they showed that youth leadership is already here and is shaping today’s world.

As they discussed topics ranging from climate change to global inequality, their arguments were compelling, passionate, and mature beyond their years.

In an extraordinary moment, the students were given a unique opportunity to meet and quiz Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer directly.

Questions ranged from personal curiosities about his school days to deeper inquiries about leadership and public speaking. Sir Keir’s welcome speech was equally inspiring, acknowledging the vital importance of debate skills and empowering young people to voice their opinions confidently.

He shared his own experiences, encouraging the students: “This is all about skills for life – being confident, working in groups, and saying what you think. This is a really wonderful opportunity, and I’m really proud you are here.”

The final debate was judged by an esteemed panel, including Deborah Meaden (Dragons’ Den), DJ Cuppy, and Jaz Singh from The Traitors. Deborah Meaden shared her admiration for the students’ performance: “I was blown away. Debate isn’t boring when you see the energy, confidence, and skills that come with it. The students were incredible, and the confidence they gain through debating is essential for life.”

After a fiercely contested debate, Cardinal Heenan High School was crowned the winner, but the real victory was the message that these young voices sent to the world: Caring is powerful, and speaking up is in.

This competition was a part of Shifting the Power, a programme designed to equip young people with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to create meaningful change, both locally and globally.

At Monty, we’re proud to have played a part in capturing this remarkable day and helping shine a light on the power of youth voices in shaping the world.
